In the days when disputes among nobles of the aristocracy were solved by dueling, the life of a person could depend on a single gunshot. When a noble had to defend his or his family's honor by participating in a pistol duel, two opponents would meet in the field and each would have a single shot in his pistol. Many duels resulted in no casualties while some ended with loss of life. Pistol dueling was most popular in 18th and 19th century Russia. Two of Russia's greatest poets, Alexander Pushkin and Michail Lermontov lost their lives in pistol duels. With its rich military tradition, including the practice of pistol dueling, and participation in many great wars, Russia was and is still home to some of the best sports target shooting athletes.

We at the Midwest Academy of Target Shooting would like to extend this same tradition to the United States by providing high quality training in pistol shooting. In these times, when firearm ownership and target shooting sports are often looked down upon by those with little knowledge or understanding, we feel that it is important for people to have a greater appreciation for target shooting sports by providing these classes. Since we teach at a higher level of instruction, the Midwest Academy of Target Shooting prefers to teach its students to be able to shoot accurately with one hand. Pistol shooting from a single hand is important in helping the athlete be more flexible while participating in competitions. Shooting from one hand is more difficult, yet more effective even with regard to personal protection and safety issues. When a bodyguard is facing an attacker and holds his gun with only one hand, only 30% of his body area is facing his opponent. This skill would be especially useful to a bodyguard if one of his hands is injured or disabled and can't be used for additional support when shooting and trying to protect the client. During the time of the Russian Empire, the aristocracy and military officers were all taught and expected to shoot accurately and effectively from a single hand. It was considered bad manners for people to discharge a pistol while supporting it with both hands.
